Learning Through Play

Choosing to enroll your preschooler in a program that supports learning through play is the most developmentally appropriate setting for enhancing their overall growth and development, at a time when it’s happening fast! When preschoolers are given opportunities to learn in natural play settings, they learn best through discovery, exploration, practice and encouragement.

What About Kindergarten Readiness.

A learning through play program is the best way to prepare your child for their big school career! Before Kindergarten, preschoolers need opportunities to:

Communication

Play allows children the opportunity to develop speech and language skills as well listening skills before they begin kindergarten. Children talk and listen while they play. At Sandcastle Preschool, we provide opportunities for solitary play which typically involves self talk and narration (e.g. “now my car is driving up the hill and then it goes down, wee, wee, wee”) companion play, where children communicate with others to add purpose to their play, and group play where they interact with the class cooperatively. The more vocabulary a child is exposed to on a day-to-day basis, the greater the variety of words a child will incorporate into play.

Cognitive Development

Science has shown that children who engage in pretend play tend to have more sophisticated levels of interaction with others and increases cognitive ability. (Bergen, D, 2002). We see development of cognitive skills like math and problem solving in a pretend grocery store, new vocabulary, like the words they need to play with the toy dinosaurs. Play and learning are not separate activities at Sandcastle Preschool… they are intertwined.

Relationship Building

At Sandcastle Preschool, we see clearly that play helps to promote the development of social skills. We see children learn how relationships work through their play experiences. At Sandcastle, children learn skills to interact with others, to share and navigated a variety of social situations.
